2. Gebruikersonderzoek Bath University — Gr. Britannïè (BATH/BUCCS)
2.1. Inleiding
Met de financiële steun van het ‘British Library Research and
Development Department’ werd aan de Bath University van maart 1973 tot
juli 1975 een vergelijkend onderzoek ingesteld naar het gebruik van de
catalogus.13
Deze universiteit ontstond in 1965 uit het ‘Bristol College of Science
and Technology’. Ze telde tijdens het academiejaar 1972/1973 in totaal
2.815 studenten (2.422 undergraduates — 382 postgraduates). In de
bibliotheek werkten 28 personeelsleden, hoofdbibliothecaris inbegrepen. De
collectie bestond uit 100.000 volumes, nagenoeg alle toegankelijk in open-
kast, en de openingsuren waren als volgt : maandag tot donderdag van 9 u.
tot 21.45 u. ; vrijdag van 9 u. tot 20.45 u. ; zaterdag van 9 u. tot 23.45 u.,
zondag van 10 u. tot 17.45 u.
Tot vóór de aanvang van het onderzoek beschikte de bibliotheek enkel
over een alfabetische hoofdwoordencatalogus en een systematische catalogus
in kaartvorm. Dank zij een subsidie van 13.400 pond kon men met het oog
op het onderzoek volgende geautomatiseerde catalogusvormen ter beschik-
