<p>Deze proclamatie, minder wreed dan die welke de hertog van Brunswich, tijdens de omwenteling van 1789, aan de Parijzenaars richtte en waarin hij hun bedreigde hunne stad te verbranden, had even als die van den hertog, een ander uitwerksel dan men er van verwachtte. Vreesaanjagingen zijn goed in vredestijd, maar in woelige stonden maken zij de bedreigden razend. Vlogen de Parijzenaars naar het paleis des konings, de Brusselaren ijlden naar het stadhuis en richtten meer baaikaden op.</p>
<p>Maar nogthans had de proclamatie van prins Frederik een uitwerksel op de hooge burgerij en op hen die zich aan het hoofd der beweging hadden gesteld.</p>
<p>De zoogezegde notabelen, zoo moedig achter eene bende gendarmen, achter den rok van den heer prokureur des konings en als zij beschikken over den sleutel van het gevang voor al wie zich tegen hen verzet, die heeren kregen schrik. En die vrees was niet verdoken, maar integendeel zoo gekend, dat het bericht ervan in het Hollandsch kamp -was gedrongen en men er daar op rekende om zich de poorten der stad te zien openen en zonder slag noch stoot binnen te trekken. De heeren Rogier en Gendebien, die begrepen waren onder de « mannen vreemd aan de stad door de proclamatie bedreigd, hadden haar verlaten, wanneer zij een voorbeeld van moed moesten geven, de burgers en armen aanvuren en met opoffering van hun leven anderen tot dit offer drijven (i).</p>
<p>(I) Om in gansch onze beoordeeling altijd eerlijk te blijven moeten wij hekeling° dat kort na het begin der gevechten de beer Rogier in Brussel is teruggekeerd e° de heer Gendebien zich moedig te Leuven, in den strijd van 1831 en in vele andere omstandigheden heeft gedragen. DE SCHRIJVER.</p>
