<p>Merci, mijnheer André, merci, sprak de kleine verheugd; dat de vervloekte Hollanders nu maar komen; mijn vader en mijn broêm staan op den steenweg van Laeken en zullen zich goed verweren ; ik zal hier op de Hollanders kloppen. Al de mannen gliralachten bij dien uitval des jongen smids. Gezellen, sprak André op eens, de burgers slapen geloof ik, maken wij ze wakker. En dit zeggende klauterde hij op de barrikaden, en riep uit volle borst : Op, burgers, op! de Hollanders! de Hollanders! En middelerwijl schoot hij zijn geweer in de lucht af. . Naar de deuren, mannen,' naar de deuren, vervolgde hij, en slaat er op met de kolven uwer geweren. Wij hebben nog vier minuten tijd. Aan dit bevel gehoorzamende, vlogen de mannen naar de deuren der winkels en burgerswoningen en sloegen er op met de geweren of met den voet, roepende : De Hollanders, de Hollanders!</p>
<p>André had zijn doel bereikt; gansch het kwartier kwam in opschudding : de meeste burgers trokken bij dat vervaarlijk gedruisch hunne vensters open, doch sloten ze weldra, wanneer zij de Hollanders in de verte bemerkten.</p>
<p>Eenigen nogthans verlieten hunne woningen en vervoegden zich goed gewapend bij de opstandelingen, door wie zij met handdrukken en kreten van blijdschap werden begroet.</p>
<p>Te midden dier geruchten, door allerhande kreten en het slaan op de deuren veroorzaakt, donderde op eens een kanonschot door de lucht.</p>
<p>De Hollanders hadden het vuur begonnen of de bevolking van hunne aankomst willen verwittigen. Dit schot was liet eerste dat zij losten, maar het laatste dat niet door honderde schoten van wege de Brusselaars werd beantwoord.</p>
