<p>wachten stond. En hadden allen uit het instinktmatig zelfbehoud wellicht zoo lang gewacht om te handelen, dit zelfde gevoel dreef hun thans voorwaarts en zou hun in staat stellen de wreedste toestanden en gevaren te trotseeren.</p>
<p>En dit schot, doordringend in het boudoir der rijke dame, in het bureel van den handelaar, in de afzichtelijke woning van den armen proletariër, zijn weerklank vindende in de hut van den boer der omliggende dorpen, deed bij al die menschen, zoo verschillend van karakter en stand een zelfde gevoel ontstaan : liefde voor de vrijheid, één zelfden kreet verwekken : overwinnen of sterven, weg met de Hollanders!</p>
<p>0, hadde prins Frederik dit kunnen zien, wie weet zou hij voortgeschoten hebben. Maar hij zag anders niet dan zijne dertien duizend krijgsmannen, dan zijne gapende kanonnen en ver voor zich eene opene stad, aan zich zelve overgelaten en oogenschijnlijk zonder verdedigers.</p>
<p>Kon hij, de koningszoon, opgeleid in den haat tegen de volkeren, in de verachting voor zijne opstanden, schooljongen der Pruisissche legeroversten, die, door de overwinningen van hun voorvader Frederik, reeds van de meesterschap over Europa droomden, zegt eens lezers en lezeressen, kon hij vermoeden dat aardewerkers, boeren, sterkwerkers, schoenmakers, penlikkers, burgers aan den arbeid niet gewoon, hem tot een schandelijken aftocht zouden gedwongen hebben? Maar neen. Wie kan eerbied, vrees voor den volksleeuw hebben, wie kan hem kennen, die niet met zijne melk is gevoed?</p>
<p>En hij meende, de ongelukkige prins Frederik, dat het maar een slag en stoot was om Brussel in te nemen, en daarom had dien koningswelp zijn aanval geschikt als eene theatervoorstelling, door militairen gegeven : stipt op het gestelde uur beginnen en eindigen. Hij had het gezegd en het moest zoo zijn : hij zou den 23 September Brussel aanvallen en de nacht zegevierend</p>
