<p>De troep ging uiteen, verdeelde zich in :verschillende groepjes, zoo hoorde weinig gemat mogelijk makende, en weldra e men anders niet meer dan den wek-klank hunner doff stappen, die ook, even als het gemompel, in de verte en in de duisternis wegstierven. Wat hadden zij besloten? Wat wraakplan hadden zij beraamd?</p>
<p>De avond was meer en meer gevallen. Het weder was slecht Het was killig en het waaide. Zwarte wolken dreven 0e eene over de andere of schenen elkander voort te stuwen. Tusschen haar, even als een bootje tussehen de klippen, vertoonde zich de maan, met oen bleek en weifelend licht, dat van tijd tot tijd nog werd verduisterd door de wolken die haar bedekten. Soms kwam zij er een beetje, dan iets meer, dan ganseh er van onder te voorschijn, om alras 0P nieuw te verdwijnen onder eene nog zwartere wolk als de vorigen.</p>
<p>Het was als de hoop, het geheim van het leven der rampzaligen, die zich soms als een zacht straalken der zon, soms als gansch haren gloed aan die ongelukkigen vertoont, hen in verrukking brengt, om weldra door eene nieuwe en nog grootere ramp verguisd te worden en hen eene doodsteek, een genadeslag toe te brengen. Aan den uitersten horizont pakten zich zwarte wolken samen, en naderden, als door hunne zwaarte teruggehouden, langzaam, doch zeker de reeds zoo erg aangevallene maan, om over haar lot te komen beslissen. Het firmament geleek niet slecht aan den politieken toestand van Holland en Belgie. De flauwe maan, door wolken soms verduisterd, geleek het Hollandsch bestuur, door gestadige aanvallen zwak geworden, en dat even als de maan door de wolkenmassa door den omwentelingsstroom, die langzaam doch zeker naderde, werd bedreigd en waaronder het bezwijken moest.</p>
