<p>de verdwijning van mejuffer Mina. Eene nieuwe ramp vermoedende spande hij al zijne krachten in dm haar spoor te ontdekken. Na twee maanden van onophoudende opzoekingen gelukte hem dit en op zekeren morgend melde hij zich voor de woning zijner meesteres, in eene kleine stad van Duitschland, aan. Wat was zij veranderd, wat had zij moeten lijden! Met vreugde werd hij door haar ontvangen en zij schonk hem haar vertrouwen. Zij verhaalde hem dat haar verloofde, na de dood heurs vaders, haar verzocht had Amsterdam te verlaten, waar zij niets dan treurige herinneringen kon ontmoeten, en hem hare hand te schenken, die zij hem, zonder dit ongeluk, met vaders toestemming zou hebben gegeven. Hem beminnende en niets vermoedende van het gebeurde, had zij, na eenige aarzeling, toegestemd. Op zijn aanraden had zij al hare juweelen medegedragen die de schuldeischers, uit liefde voor de nagedachtenis heurs vaders, haar gelaten hadden. In den grond der ziel haar vader betreurende, vend zij eenige verzachting aan die smart, door te leven met hem die zij beminde en van wien zij dacht bemind te worden. Alhoewel hij steeds een voorwendsel had gevonden om het huwelijk te verschuiven, waarop zij altijd aandrong, had zij hem in volle vertrouwen de kostbare juweelen, die zij niet meer dragen wilde, ter bewaring gegeven. Misdadig vertrouwen! De juweelen werden verkocht, de gelden verspild, de engelachtige Mina meer en meer verwaarloosd, en wanneer er niets meer overbleef en armoede en ellende voor de deur ston,.den, dan verliet de ellendeling de rampzalige Mina, die weldra moeder zou worden, voor altijd. Wat zij dan geleden, wat ik dan geraasd en beraamd heb, is onzeggelijk ; zij kreeg een doodslag en ik was al 4 zinneloos. Ja, vader Willem moest dan zinneloos zijn geweest, wani de herinnering alleen maakten hem schrikwekkend om zien,</p>
