<p>En gedreven door dankbaarheid, edelmoedigheid, zelfsopoffering en liefde, door de schoonste gevoelens die den mensch bezielen kunnen, had zij het voorstel aan it moeder n gedaan en was zij verrukt geweest het met gretigheid te zien aannemen.</p>
<p>Langzaam rolde het oude rijtuig over den hobbeligen steenweg. De koetsier had wel de zweep te doen klappen, er mede op den rug of tusschen de beenen zijner paarden te slaan, de arme, oude dieren liepen er niet te sneller om; afgebeuld en versleten als zij waren, was hun lichten draf eene bijna gestadige strompeling. De traagheid der reis, het schokken van het rijtuig, dit alles kwam den rampzaligen toestand der beide vrouwen nog verergeren.</p>
<p>Zij hoopten wel, in de eerste oogenblikken van geestdrift hadden zij er zelfs niet aan getwijfeld of zij zouden Paul, André, Victor, wellicht Helena en Rudolf terugzien, maar langzamerhand had de argwaan in hare ziel plaats genomen. Naarmate zij Leuven naderden, werden de berichten onrustbarender en vertelde men haar meer en meer van de gedeeltelijke gevechten, die reeds hadden plaats gehad en van de vermoeienissen welke het leger had onderstaan.</p>
<p>Dit kwam haar toestand nog verergeren en zoo was de reis naar Leuven een ware kruisweg.</p>
<p>Het heerlijk schouwspel dat de natuur haar boodt, het werken op de velden tot het binnenbrengen van den oogst, het zingen en feesten der boeren, die daarmede reeds klaar waren, hadden voor de beide vrouwen bijna geene aantrekkelijkheid.</p>
<p>Zij staarden , staarden lang door de vensters heen, denkende aldus den weg te verkorten, een einde te zien, maar de lange steenweg, die in de verte bijna met de wolken samensmolt,</p>
<p>aan wien zij het leven te danken had. Dit leven dat hij voor haar bewaard, door het gevoel hetwelk hij deed onstaan, verheerlijkt, gelouterd had, wilde zij thans aan hem wijden, thans dat hij leed.</p>
