<p>Op dien onverwachten aanval waren de Belgen niet bedacht.</p>
<p>Daar ontstond een wreed gevecht, dat korten tijd duurde; de Hollanders bleven meester van den IJzer-berg,ondanks da moedige pogingen der Belgen om hem in te nemen.</p>
<p>In dien strijd was André voor de tweede maal gekwetst geworden, maar thans zeer erg : hij had een sabelhouw op het hoofd ontvangen en de slag was niet gansch door zijn hoofddeksel afgeweerd geworden.</p>
<p>Het bloed stroomde hem van het aangezicht, wat moeite hij ook deed om het te stelpen.</p>
<p>Al zijne krachten verzamelende,trok hij zich uit den strijd terug en trachtte een nabij gelegen steenweg -te bereiken, waar eenige wagens der ziekenverplegers stonden.</p>
<p>Op eens vloeide het bloed minder uit zijne wond, die waarschijnlijk voor het grootste deel gesloten was, door bloed dat zich in zijn haar had geklonterd.</p>
<p>Dit gelukkig toeval schonk hem de kracht den steenweg te bereiken, en teekenen te doen aan de bedienden der wagens.</p>
<p>Hij werd door hen bemerkt, verzorgd en in eene der karren opgenomen, die juist gereed stonden de strijdplaats te verlaten, om zich niet ver van daar, naar een afgelegen ziekenhuis, in der haast ingericht, te begeven.</p>
<p>Op het oogenblik dat de wagen wegreed, werd een tweeden aanval op den IJzer-berg bevolen, die met denzelfden moed volbracht werd en aan de zege deed hopen. De strijd was overigens op alle punten hardnekkig, en niemand kon op dit °ogenblik beslissen wie overwinnaar zijn zou.</p>
<p>De Belgen, ondanks hunne minderheid in inrichting en getalsterkte, gedroegen zich zeer goed en boden een weérstand, waaraan de vijand zich niet verwacht had.</p>
