<p>Daar lag hij, niet wachtend naar eene wonderlijke genezing, naar de redding, naar een kus of een handdruk, maar naar eene kist, naar het graf, de laatste rustplaats aller menschen.</p>
<p>En dat lijk toonde hun door zijne onbewegelijkheid het wreede van den dood en dat er weldra onder hun, eene onvervangbare leemte zou ontstaan.</p>
<p>De boerin en Paul sloten de oogen van den doode, wierpen hem een laken over, het aangezicht ontbloot latende, terwijl Helena, Rudolf en Victor hunne moeder omringden en tegenhielden, die in hare smart zich op het lijk haars zoons werpen wilde. Men trachtte haar de kamer te doen verlaten, maar zij verzette er zich hardnekkig tegen. Haar toestand, de foltering waaraan zij leed, baarden onrust aan hare kinderen en men besloot den doode op de bovenkamer van het huisje te dragen.</p>
<p>Rudolf gelastte daar eenigen zijner soldaten mede. André werd in het bed der boerin gelegd. Rudolf gelastte zich ook met de formaliteiten te vervullen, noodig voor eene begraving en die zoo treurig zijn voor elk familielid of vriend van den afgestorvene. Hij kreeg verlof bij Zijne familie te blijven,mn de begraving bij te wonen. Deze had des anderendaags plaats, op het kerkhof der gemeente. Dien dag nog verliet gansch de familie, uitgezonderd Rudolf, het dorp om zich naar Gent te begeven. Die lange reis, gedurende dewelke mevrouw Van Acken, weinige oogenblikken had opgehouden van weenen, was uiterst treurig. Helena, die harp moeder niet had willen verlaten, trachtte haar te troosten, doch alles was vruchteloos. Eenige dagen later was de familie Van Acken weder te Gent.</p>
