<p>Het is algemeen gekend dat koning Leopold de eerste is gaan loopen, in den veldslag van Leuven.</p>
<p>Dit teeken der vlucht door Leopold I gegeven, is een ernstig, een zeer gewichtig feit. Die vlucht geschiedde, bijna Juist op het oogenblik, toen de afgezanten van den generaal des Franschen legers, zich in het hoofdkwartier van den Hollandschen krijgsoverste aanboden, en hem bevolen in naam van hunnen koning, den slag te staken, wat ook werd gedaan.</p>
<p>Nog een uur strijd en de slag van Leuven ware geëindigd ten gevolge van een wapenstilstand door Frankrijk aan Holland opgedrongen, en het Belgisch leger zou bespaard geworden zijn van dien vernederenden aftocht, van die uitzinnige vlucht, door Conscience in zijne Omwenteling van 1830, zoo goed beschreven. , Een ander merkwaardig feit is het volgende: Zoo weinig was de koning van Holland van zin den veldtocht voort te zetten, wanneer Frankrijk Belgie ter hulp kwam, dat hij aan zijn zoon bevol achteruit te trekken en geen slag te leveren, zoodra hij vernomen had dat het Fransche leger den Belgischen bodem betreden bad. Doch de prins van Oranje, berekende dat hij het Belgisch leger slag kon leveren vóór de aankomst der Franschen en aan Leopold I, die hem bij eene Engelsche prinses den loef had afgesteken, -eens eene nederlaag willende doen ondergaan, bekreunde hij zich niet om bet bevel, en ging den veldslag aan. De vader had gehandeld volgens de politieke kuiperijen, maar de zoon had zich eene vroegere beleediging herinnerd .en wilde ze aan zijn tegenstander betaald zetten.</p>
